Is Buying a Whole or Half Lamb (or Hog) Right for You?

Use the checklist below to see if purchasing a whole or half lamb or hog is the right fit for your household, freezer space, and cooking habits.

A Whole Lamb or Hog Is a Great Choice If You:

✅ Want the best value per pound on pasture-raised meat
✅ Have adequate freezer space (~4 cubic feet for a whole lamb, ~5 for a whole hog)
✅ Cook a variety of cuts regularly (chops, roasts, ground, stew, shanks, sausage, etc.)
✅ Like having a fully stocked freezer for months at a time
✅ Appreciate knowing exactly where your food comes from
✅ Want control over cut thickness and processing options (when available)
✅ Are comfortable making a larger upfront purchase to save long-term

A Half Lamb or Half Hog May Be Better If You:

✅ Have more limited freezer space (~2 cubic feet for a half lamb, ~2.5 for a half hog)
✅ Want the same variety of cuts, just in smaller quantities
✅ Are new to buying farm-direct meat
✅ Are feeding a smaller household
✅ Plan to split a whole animal with a friend or family member

Consider Starting Smaller If You:

⚠️ Rarely cook lamb or pork at home
⚠️ Prefer only a few specific cuts (for example, just chops or ground)
⚠️ Don’t currently have freezer space available
⚠️ Are unsure about storing meat long-term

Still Unsure?

Many first-time customers choose to split a whole lamb or hog with a friend or family member. It offers excellent value per pound while keeping freezer space and cost manageable—and you still get a wide variety of cuts.
